Vitamins and Minerals

Besides carbohydrates, proteins, and fats, the body needs other micronutrients, such as vitamins and minerals, to keep it functioning properly. They help maintain health and are essential to the growth and repair of tissues. These nutrients can be found in foods and in dietary supplements. They also work to protect the skin, vision, and blood from infections.

Vitamins are organic compounds that are able to metabolize and perform different functions in the body. They are essential to proper bodily function, and can be synthesized by animals or extracted from food sources. There are two types of vitamins: fat-soluble and water-soluble.

The liver and other fat tissues are the main holding pens for fat-soluble vitamins. These vitamins enter the lymph vessels and are then distributed throughout the body. These vitamins may be required at a genetic level and assist in maintaining the integrity of membranes. The kidneys continuously regulate the levels of these vitamins, removing any excess through urine. Some vitamins can stay in the body for a long time, while others are quickly removed. Regardless of the type of vitamin, it is important to get a variety of nutrients from your diet, ideally in a balanced manner.

Water-soluble vitamins are dissolved in water and can be obtained from foods or dietary supplements. Some of these vitamins, such as vitamin C and E, function as antioxidants, preventing the oxidation of other materials. Other vitamins, such as thiamin, pantothenic acid, and riboflavin, are essential for energy production.

Most vitamins can be obtained from the foods we eat. However, it is a good idea to take a supplement when you do not get enough vitamins through your diet. It is also possible for some medications to interfere with the absorption of vitamins, so it is best to consult a physician before taking a vitamin supplement. Some of the vitamins listed below are not necessary for good health and may not be helpful if taken in large quantities.

Vitamin A is a fat-soluble vitamin that is found in animal and plant foods. It is a major antioxidant and helps the body absorb iron. It is also responsible for wound healing. It plays a vital role in cell growth and supports the immune system. It can be found in orange and yellow fruits and vegetables, as well as in whole milk. It is sometimes added to cereals and fortified foods. It can also be found in crimini mushrooms.

Unlike other biologically significant compounds, vitamins are organic. They can be inactivated by heat, air, and chemicals. Some of them, such as vitamin A, have been linked to lung cancer in smokers. Other vitamin deficiencies can have negative effects on health. Depending on the vitamin, a deficiency can be caused by a variety of factors, including inadequate consumption of the food source, exposure to pollutants, and genetic traits.

The body uses vitamins to synthesize certain enzymes. They are also used to regulate the chemical reactions of various parts of the body. Some vitamins are used to keep the nervous system, blood, and tissues healthy.
